McDowell makes turn with 3-shot lead

06/20/2010 - Pebble Beach, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Graeme McDowell held a three-shot lead when he made the turn Sunday during the final round of the U.S. Open.

The 30-year-old from Northern Ireland had one birdie and one bogey in his first nine holes and was helped into the lead by bad play from some of golf's biggest names.

He stood at three-under par, three strokes ahead of Ernie Els and Gregory Havret.

Els tied McDowell for the lead with a two-putt birdie at No. 6, but stumbled around the turn and dropped five shots back by the 11th.

The two-time U.S. Open champion bogeyed No. 9, took a drop and double-bogeyed the 10th and then bogeyed the 11th. But he pulled within three with a short birdie at the 12th.

Phil Mickelson and 54-hole leader Dustin Johnson were four strokes back, and Tiger Woods trailed by six.

Things sure fell apart for Johnson, who lost his three-shot lead at No. 2 when he duffed two shots -- including one he struck left-handed -- on the way to a triple bogey.

That was only the beginning of his troubles on a Pebble Beach course where he's won each of the last two years.

Johnson hit into a hazard at No. 3 and made double-bogey when he couldn't find his ball, and he went out-of-bounds and made bogey at No. 4 -- a hole he eagled Saturday after driving the green with an iron.

He also bogeyed No. 7, which was playing just 92 yards. He hit the best shot there on Saturday when the hole was a bit longer at 99 yards, tapping in for a birdie.

But the run he made Saturday was a distant memory as Johnson went seven-over par through his first nine holes in the final round.
